Complete an article critique. The purpose of this exercise is for you to critically evaluate how well the author discusses the environmental topic he or she is writing about. Though a brief summary of the article must be included in your critique, a summary is not the main purpose, and though you may include your personal opinion on the topic, this is not an essay on the topic being discussed. This critique is a performance evaluation of the author. a. From a periodical, choose a feature article dealing with an environmental topic (for ideas, see the Course Topics section in this module). b. Include the following in the heading of the critique: title of the article, name of the author, name of the periodical, and date of the publication. c. Summarize the article. This summary should be about one page in length. d. Evaluate the author’s balance of coverage. Does the author present both sides of the topic or issue, or is the author biased toward one side or the other? Explain the basis of your evaluation. e. Did the author do his or her “homework” for this article? That is, did the author obtain any background information on the topic? Explain the basis of your evaluation. f. If the article deals with an environmental issue, does the author offer a preferred solution? g. Can you discern the author’s worldview or his or her position on this environmental topic? h. Assign a letter grade for the author’s performance, and briefly discuss how the performance could be improved. i. Discuss your opinion/position on the topic of the article. This should be about one page in length.
