This essay is due July 17 by Midnight. Any paper submitted on or before that time will recieve one "on-time" point. Papers submitted after that point will not receive the on-time point but will be accepted through the last day of Finals Week (7/30/09) at midnight. Include your name, the course title and date at the upper left of the page. This paper is part of the writing requirements for all transfer classes and will be graded on syntax, grammar, and content. It must be typed, double-space, stapled and be a minimum of 1000 words (approx. 3 1/4 pages). You are not required to use outside source material (outside the textbook) but, if used, outside sources must be cited and referenced. Take care to answer all questions (in your selected option). Ignoring part of the questions will degrade your score. Select one of the following: Option 1: Dreams We spend roughly one third of our life sleeping and perhaps 20% to 25% of that time dreaming. Describe what happens (physiologically) in our bodies and brains while we are dreaming (or are in REM sleep). What is the purpose of dreams? Describe and discuss the three theories of dreams covered in Ciccarelli. Make a case for the theory you believe is correct (or another/none as the case may be). Be sure to comment on the meaning and content of dreams. Are they significant? Can we reliably interpret their meaning? Base your arguments on research and logical reasoning. Give an example of one of your dreams (one you are comfortable sharing). Does the dream have a source in your recent experience? Discuss its meaning, if any. Is it significant? Keep your descriptions of sleep to a minimum. Option 2: Psychology Applied Psychology is a very broad discipline with content that might be applied to one’s own experience. Discuss how you have or might use the ideas and theories learned in this class to improve your life. If you prefer to be less personal, describe how “an individual” might benefit from the information and experience of this class. Please use specific examples of behavior and discuss (at least five ideas or theories) in the context of specific theories of behavior discussed in the textbook. Option 3: The Fallibility of Memory Discuss constructive processing, the misinformation effect and false memories. How do these processes work? What do these processes say about the accuracy of our memories in general? What implications do they have for our legal system? Provide several examples of studies that have been done that provide our current knowledge of this subject. References to studies in Ciccarelli should be cited as: “(Johnson,as cited in Ciccarelli,2006)” where Johnson is the name of the author being credited. Give a few examples of your own memories.
