Assignment #1 Field Trip: Where is Multicultural America? Find a place in your community that can be described as an American cultural enclave, (Asian American, African American, American Indian, Latino American or other cultural group). Choose a place associated with an ethnicity or culture of which you do not consider yourself a part. Visit this place and spend at least one hour observing what goes on there. Go with others in the class if you can. While I encourage you to go on your field trip in pairs or groups, each student must hand their own paper. Try to speak to at least one person about the place and the neighborhood. Consider the following questions: • What kind of place is this? What do people do here? Give concrete details in your description. • Who lives in the this place? How has the neighborhood (local population, land use, etc.) changed over time? • What is "cultural" (Asian, African, Indian, Latino, etc.) about this place? What is "American"? • What is on the menu? What languages is the menu in? • Do you belong in this place? Are you comfortable or uncomfortable? Why or why not? • What role, if any, does this place have in the local or greater community? • Does anything else go on here besides just eating? In other words, does this place have any cultural significance beyond other restaurants in the area? Take notes on your observations. Upon your return, review your notes and think about the ways that this American community and identity are embedded in particular social, spatial, and historical contexts. Write a essay analyzing your visit. Your paper (all drafts) must be printed in Times New Roman 12 point font on double-spaced pages with 1 or 1.25” margins. This paper should be 3-4 pages. It is worth 100 points. This paper can be of any resturant I have visited, I will have traveled to this destination any time this semester. I would prefer it to contain a Bosnian or African theme. No korean type establishments. This is an essay paper no citation is needed.
