Title: Search the internet database sites to find a book related to a specific theme or topic that is appropriate for second graders. Choose a book that the kids will love. Author of the book: ???????? Using the basic plan for developing literature unit below: Step One: Choose the book. ????? Step Two: Read the book, making notes of important events and characters. Note vocabulary words that students may not know and that you should introduce prior to their reading. Make note of any literature elements that the novel is a good example of that you can share with students. Step Three: After reading you have finished the book, create at least ten questions that you can use as a comprehension check. Have a mixture of multiple chice, true/false, and essay questions. At least half of your questions should focus on higher levels of thinking. Step Four: Create a vocabulary list by chapter for students. This will help both you and the students as you go through the book. Also, create at least one or two vocabulary activities where students can practice their new words. Step Five: Create several activities that students can do as they are reading the book. Try to have at least one activity from each content area. Connecting this book to all your content areas is ideal. Step Six: Create at least one or two writing assignments. Through you will probably be tempted to create assignments in the sensory/descriptive or imaginative/narrative domains, try to also have students do some expository writing as part of the unit. Step Seven: Include a study of at least one literary element. Design an activity for follow-up. Step Eight: Design an introduction to the novel that will have students on the edge of their seats waiting to read it. This is the basic plan for developing a unit on your own. The unit can be short or long as you wish and your class time can accommodate. Most of all, make sure the kids have fun with this story.
