You can get a good idea of what academic reviews are like from looking at those in relevant journals. Do not write a review much longer than this. Learn to be both concise and precise. You must indicate the number of words at the end of your book review, e.g., ‘Word Count: 751’. For this, use the ‘Word Count’ function in your computer.You must include the title, author, date and place of publication, publisher and number of pages at the top of your review.Some suggestions of elements that might go into a review:• You need to provide an accurate summary of the book sufficient to give a reader of your review a clear idea of the book''s content and argument, but without going into too much detail. This balance requires practice and skill.• A good review provides some attempt at a critical assessment of the book: does it achieve its aims? Does it miss out essential material or include irrelevant material? Are the methods used and the concepts employed clear and appropriate? Or do the methods, concepts and approach adopted result in an unbalanced account? For instance are women''s voices/perspectives left out or, conversely, given too much emphasis etc.? Is the writing clear? Is the layout and structure clear and accessible?• Remember that the word limit means you will have to think carefully about what to focus on and what to leave out.Assessment of the review will be based on:• Content: How clear and accurate is the account of the book? How insightful and incisive is the critical assessment of the book? • Structure and expression: is the review clearly written? Does it have a clear and logical structure? Is the grammar and spelling good? Is it within the word limit?-- It is extremely important that, while using the appropriate anthropological vocabulary, you write up the account in your own terms. Students who simply lift whole phrases (and even worse) from the ethnography will be penalized.
