Course Description This course is an analysis of management responses to sensitive topics and issues related to diversity and multiculturalism in today’s criminal justice organizations. The course explores the historical, theoretical and practical aspect of gender, race, class and ethnicity issues in criminal justice from a management perspective. As an example, the course examines management responses to multicultural issues in the form of decisions, policies and programs. Course Specific Outcomes Place the issues of race and gender in the criminal justice system in a broader societal context by examining the historical and theoretical developments of race and gender issues; Analyze, support and recommend managerial responses to multicultural issues in criminal justice organizations; Summarize the criminal justice system responses to minority groups; Compare and contrast the extent and differences in the nature and cause of crime by and against minority groups; and, Demonstrate an awareness and understanding of different cultures. Assignments: #1 In a 3 to 5 page paper, provide a sound argument for why a law enforcement agency would need to be concern itself with the issue of diversity. Cite at least two sources. Do not cite Wikipedia as a primary source. #2 In 3 to 5 page, expound on the consequences to a law enforcement agency for not concerning itself with the issue of diversity in its staffing. Cite at least two sources. Wikipedia as a primary sources. #3 In a 3 to 5 page paper, provide an example of the best case study on community outreach performed by a law enforcement agency. You can cite a personal example here as well as your own personal experiences. Wikipedia as a primary source. #4 "the wild card assignment", this academic exercise requires that you select a topic from the readings that is of particular interest to you. In a 3-5 page papre, elaborate on your choice and make a convincing argument as to its importance with regard to this general topic. This is an opportunity for you to take an active part in the learning process and to show that you are as adept at assignment select as your instructior.
