Essay Structure: This is the planned approach I am going to take, could you advise me if this is felt to be weak by the author. Introduction Historiography Main historiographical debates as I see them revolve around the phases in his civil rights career and how this impacted on his values and philosophy. Generally it seems to be described as two or three phases. Other areas which I would include are the importance that religion played in his life, how his socialist beliefs were relevant and how his dedication has been considered as a means of personal atonement for his failings. Background I have broken his pre-Civil Rights background into three areas: • Youth –giving him his base values and centered around his family background. • Education – which helped him develop his philosophy • Religious values – how this contributed to his values. I intend to include his beliefs, attitudes to the church and his conversion to a determined belief in the church Civil Rights Career I intend to show how this can be divided into three phases: Montgomery Bus Protest A local non violent protest with specific goals Montgomery to Selina Bridge The development of broader national goals and his recognition and leadership Finally until his assassination A phase of international involvement, the anti-war protests and the Poor Peoples Movement I intend to summarise this into analysing whether his values/ philosophy did change over time or whether it was his goals that changed.
