Research Proposal Guidelines The following headings may be used in the submission that is to be typed in 11/2 (one and half) spacing and the proposal should compromise about 10 pages: 1. Title 2. Background/Introduction/orientation to the Study (brief background of what the study is all about to enable reader to understand the problem I intend researching. Also to be stated is my personal involvement in the study, and why I chose to undertake this research. Although a personal statement, it should be based on facts by referring to various sources. I should convince the reader that the research I intend to undertake is indeed topical & amp; valuable with a brief explanation of the value of the research for education & amp; for a specific country. 3. Literature review (Establish what has already been written on the subject/problem; what research has been done; what results/conclusions arose from it; which theories exist in the field & amp; how my research will be able to link up) 4. Problem Statement (and Statement of Hypothesis/-es, where applicable) 5. Aim /Purpose of the Study (must indicate what I wish to achieve with the research in respect of solving the research problem. If a main problem & amp; sub-problems have been stated, it is likely that an overarching aim with auxiliary objectives will be stated for the investigation.) 6. Motivation for the Research (brief description of the following aspects: importance of research for the field of education/country,; contribution which the investigation can make to the knowledge foundation of education; expected results- a review of this is important for the assessment of the research proposal; limitations envisioned for the research) 7. Research methods and design [methods to be applied in the investigation to collect data to be relevant to the problem which needs to be solved. In research design discuss the anticipated plan of action- how I will apply the methods in the investigation and if applicable, the respondent groups and sampling techniques(s)] 8. Chapter Division (provide a brief explanation of the draft table of contents, with a short description of the content of each chapter. – standard pattern will show more or less the following • Usually 5 or 6 chapters • Chapter 1 contains an Introduction to/background of the investigation, Statement of the problem, hypothesis, Purpose of the study, research design and methods, Motivation/value of the research, and definition of terms, • Chapter 2 (or chapters 2 and 3) – background /introduction/Orientation to the study, and review of literature. • In subsequent chapters the research design is described, the methods (s) explained, the collected information conveyed, and an analysis and discussion of the results provided. • Concluding chapter(s). In the last one or two chapters a summary is given of the research results, it is determined (where applicable) whether the hypothesis/hypotheses is/are supported or not and conclusions and recommendations (with regard to subsequent research as well) are made. 9.
