COMM 200 Communication Across Cultures Summer 2008 Term Project Topics Option #2: Research on a Cultural Group ________________________________________ The goal of this project is a paper that combines literature review summarizing research/writing done by others on the culture that you choose and data gathered from interviews with members of the culture/cultural group. To do this paper, you need to select a culture that you wish to learn about; research this culture using information published in books, academic journals, interviews, encyclopedias and/or other scholarly materials. You will need to cite a minimum of five research sources and at least three of these must be academic – i.e. scholarly books or articles published in an academic journal. You may look for additional materials on the Internet or from other sources for the remainder. You must also locate and interview two members of this culture that you find in your community. In your paper, you should consider (but are not limited to) the following questions: • What are some of the main differences between this culture and your own? • What are some communication style differences between this culture and your own? • How are nonverbal and other language patterns used in this culture? • How are social roles such as gender and family viewed in this culture? • Does the history of the community/region/nation in which members of this culture live appear prominent in cultural patterns? • How does this culture’s history influence perception of and communication between this and your own culture? • What are some of the stereotypes that members of your culture hold about members of the culture that you are studying? Do they appear to hold any truth? • What are some of the stereotypes that members of the culture you study hold about your culture? Do these appear to hold any truth? • What would someone going to work or study with members of this culture need to know?
