Introduction The way organisations deal with health and safety issues in their built environment activities is said by Griffith & Howarth (2000) to be “...without doubt a most important function of management...” and the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister [ODPM] has put its authority behind moves to improve construction’s blemished accident related image. The H & SC published Revitalising Health & Safety in 2000, yet it might appear that some organisations have responded more than others in the years since. You are invited to assess the position in a specific organisation of your choice with regard to its policy and implementation, and draw conclusions from the evidence that you review. Learning Outcomes On successful completion of the module, the student should be able to: 1. Demonstrate knowledge of the principal health and safety legislation affecting the construction process and its application The Brief A new construction company (or your current company) has asked you to consider how it should develop a health and safety policy and what the policy should contain. Use the OHSAS 18001 and other appropriate policies and regulations to develop a comprehensive Health and Safety policy as requested. Your paper should explain the legal requirements and how they act to protect employees, employers and the public. Dividing the submission into sections by using sub-headings makes presentation and reading easier; and a robust Conclusion (drawing on evidence uncovered in your study) is a vital element. Reference sources can be freely drawn on, but remember to cite the source(s) used, and identify them properly in a References section at the back of the report.
