Your job here is to examine the primary sources about the battle of Cannae in light of Saban’s treatment. In particular, you might consider one of the following approaches: • How do the sources on Cannae illustrate some of the problems that historians face when trying to understanding Roman warfare, as described by Saban? • How well do the various models of combat described by Saban fit (or not fit) with the descriptions of what transpired at Cannae? What are the pros and cons of these models, given the primary sources we have for this battle? • Can any of the problems described by Saban be solved for the case of Cannae, given our sources? Note that, in every case, you are not simply giving a general description of what transpired at the battle. Rather, your job is to work within the theoretical framework that Saban proposes, and to grapple with the primary source material within that context. If your findings indicate shortcomings in Saban’s arguments, you should indicate what those are. I will provide electronic copies via e-mail, when you request them, of the Saban article and two primary sources which you are to use to accomplish the aforementioned.
