Students are asked to consider a comparison and contrast between two areas of the world which are either known to them, or important to them, and to ask whether the ideas given by Geert Hofstede theroy helps to understand the contrast/comparison. Usually these ‘areas of the world’ will be individual countries. It is however permissible that students look at ‘regions’ (by which is meant ‘groups of similar countries’), or look at different areas and/or ethnicities within one country, where there is significant internal diversity. It is likely that one of the countries (or group of countries) chosen will be the student’s home country (although this is not a requirement). Students may wish to take a broad look at countries as a whole. Or they may wish to narrow the assignment down to concentrate in more detail on specific issues (corporate, political, cultural, environmental). Students may wish to bring industry sector-specific issues to bear, and this is also welcome.
