My view of the paper: There is a whole group of the Canterbury Tales sometimes called the Marriage Tales (the Wife of Bath''s is one of these). Throughout these various tales, the relationship between men and women, particularly in marriage, is explored as well as the ideal form a marriage should take. Many of the male tale tellers express views that women should be subordinate to men, that a good wife is one who never questions her husband. For example, one tale tells the story of Constance, who is loyal to her husband even when he "tests" her in the most cruel ways and is later restored to her proper place be being unswervingly loyal to the said abusive man (the Wife of Bath''s tale is in part a reaction to such tales). One tale suggests a more balanced relationship might be ideal, and some critics speculate that this was the closest to Chaucer''s actual thoughts. At any rate, it would be fine if you wished to include these tales for my paper. In fact, it might even be better given the nature of my topic.
