Women are responsible for about 70% of the food production in Africa and for that matter Ghana, and yet many women in Africa and for that matter Ghana either do not own land or often lack quality access to land. Where women do have access to land the quality of the access is often in doubt or limited as they usually have no control over these lands. Many local and international NGOs in the developing world influenced heavily by the literature on women in development and women, the environment and development often contend that women’s lack of access to land plays a very significant role in food insecurity, they further argue that women play a central role in sustainable environmental management by virtue of their special relation to the environment. They argue that women improved access to land will not only improve women’s well being but will go a long way to enhance food security and that women by virtue of their special relation with the environment take better care of land ( use land sustainably) rather than extracting land for economic gains While women involvement in environment management in general and improved access to land in particular may be a good idea, however it appears not only simplistic but problematic to think that improved access alone will meet women practical and strategic needs Also the argument that women have a special relation with the environment can indeed be disempowering. My paper will therefore explore or problematicise the push for access to land for women in rural areas in Ghana. It will argue that social space (social relations) in Northern Ghana is gendered and there are indeed traditional practices and policies that discriminate against women and that lack of access to land by women may as well be a manifestation of these deep root causes .
