Introduction In his account of the resurrection of Jesus, John records that, on the morning Jesus rose from the dead, he appeared to Mary but interestingly, Mary did not recognize him. According to John, when Mary came to the tomb of Jesus the morning he was resurrected, she looked for Jesus inside the tomb but she did not see the body of Jesus. Instead, she saw two angels. Then the text says that, after conversing with the angels, she turned around and saw Jesus standing nearby, but she did not realize that it was Jesus until Jesus called her by her name. If John''s goal in narrating the story was to persuade his audience that Jesus who was crucified, died and was buried, the same did rise from the dead, the question is, why did John record that the resurrected Jesus was not initially recognized? In other words, how does the failure to recognize Jesus function narratively/rhetorically in the Gospel of John? A close look at John''s description of Jesus'' appearances indicates that he suggests that there was something different with the body of the resurrected Jesus or that the risen Jesus'' physical appearance was not the same as he was in his pre-resurrection body. We see in John''s Gospel how the risen Jesus demonstrates abilities that no other human being has ever had. He can be touched, and eats like any other human being; but at the same time, he can appear and disappear at will. Thus, it seems that, by recording that Mary initially failed to recognize the risen Jesus, John is insinuating not only that Jesus truly rise from the dead, but also that Jesus'' resurrection body was unlike his pre-resurrection body. The purpose of this paper is to explore what John apparently thought Jesus'' post-resurrection body was like when he appeared to his disciples. This will be done through examination of the scholarly literature on this topic followed by an analysis of John''s Gospel and other biblical texts to determine the exact nature of the descriptions of the resurrected Jesus that John presents. dInst Instructions - This thesis is a research to discover John''s understanding of Jesus'' resurrection body, what he believes Jesus'' resurrection body was like when he appeared to Mary Magdalene three days after Jesus rises from the dead. The researcher must be specialized in the Biblical Studies, New Testament and Theology. In writing the thesis, he or she will need to follow the guidance as specified in the manual attached (it is specifically the section highlighted in yellow in the manual) - Secondly, as mentioned in the manual, a review of previous studies of the subject is important. Naturally, it is a review of what NT scholars and theologians tought Jesus'' resurrection body was or how they approach the question. There have been theories posited to explain the nature of Jesus'' resurrection (in my tomorrow''s email to the writers, I will suggest some to be featured in the thesis). The thesis will analyze those views that have been advanced but are wrong in the light of the Gospel of John, the Synoptic Gospels and the Scripture; Analytically the writer will use the theories and approaches that seem to be consistent with the early Church''s perspective or the view of Jesus'' original disciples. - The thesis will ascertain my personal position about why John writes that the risen Jesus was not recognized, what I think John, the synoptic Gospels or Jesus'' original disciples (the Early Church) believe the nature of the body of the resurrected Jesus was (versus the various scholarly views in the New Testament studies).
