After his outstanding performance in the 2004 Athens Olympic Games, nothing could be compared with the emotion generated through China if the national hero Liu Xiang could retain his gold medal in the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games on men’s 110 meters’ track. However, on Beijing time 10:30 a.m. August 18th, 2008, when the Chinese, ranged from new born babies to aged elders’ attention were all concentrated on Liu, his hamstring injury forced him to withdraw without even a start. Like an unanimous dream was broken, the whole China sank into grief. For just a few seconds, Liu’s gossip had been passed all over the country. The once idolized hero immediately became the target of people’s scorn. All his supporters abandoned him. Many claimed that during the past four years, Liu enjoyed the best treatment a Chinese athlete could ever imagine. Now, he is stuffed by money and fame and is no longer the skillful, flexible and agile track star they knew. This national issue clearly reveals the nation’s problem. Liu possesses the weakness and fragility of human being. He is not a machine. As a Chinese, I have to say, we need gold medals, but what matters more is humanity. Those who believed he was faking his injury should be despised the most strongly. Liu is an athlete, not an actor. He also has no need to act ostentatiously to satisfy others’ hypocrisy. As 1.3 billion people were looking at him and thinking of him at that very moment, Liu became the representative of the Chinese speed, not only the speed of running, but also the speed of progressing. It’s true that we are disappointed, but the one who desires victory the most is Liu himself. We can’t see his four years’ of dedication, but judge his enthusiasm on the field, judge his frequently appeared face in front of advertising campaign for major corporations. We only discern his easiness and relaxation during each competition. Like Michael Phelps, when everyone gives him the title of “swimming prince”, do you really think every day he does is eating and swimming? Why didn’t those criticizers give more opinions when Liu won the gold medal in the year of 2004? Who’s the blind one? It is understandable that China doesn’t want to expose the scar of once being called an “Asian sick man”. It is also reasonable that Chinese people have not the slightest desire to recall the humiliated past. The Beijing Olympic Games fulfills the superficial satisfaction of proving to be strong. For most Chinese, the number of gold medals measures the strength of a country. Therefore, they worship the champions, ignore other athletes who also contribute their whole lives to sports and to nationalism. China has thirty-five gold medals at present. It’s already a historical breakthrough; whereas the national view of pride is still limited only to “gold”. No one cheered for the Chinese fencing woman even though she was only one point away from receiving Olympic Gold Metal. Every athlete among those one thousand in Beijing Olympic Games is outstanding and deserves more than that. Why Chinese people are so reluctant to praise their heroes? The Chinese perspective of glory, gold metals needs to be improved and definitely can be improved, but there’s probably a good reason for its stagnation.
