They allow you to reflect on your life, affirm what others mean to you, articulate what you stand for, and illustrate your values. For the purposes of this class you will write your ethical will as follows: • Direct it to whomever you want to address. • It does not need to, but may, contain spiritual values (religious values, etc.). • Take this seriously. You don’t need to share what you don’t want to, this can be very business-like and as long as you answer the questions, I won’t grade based on your values, but in your execution of the assignment. • As many of you are quite young, and have not reached the stage in life where you’re likely to have lived these things yet, you can write it for what you hope to be/do/live. • NOTE: These make great gifts to parents, spouses, children, etc. Truly, many students have given them to their family members after doing it in class. OPTION A: Environmental legacy • Explain Leopold’s land ethic, fully defining and citing properly. Discuss carrying capacity and explain how we have breached this check on human behavior. • Discuss what you have done/hope to do to follow the land ethic and leave an impact regarding environmental issues. • Address what you have done/hope to do regarding your livelihood and the environment. What business will you establish/hope to establish, how will you make an impact as an employee or employer regarding the environment? OPTION B: Stakeholder legacy • Explain stakeholder theory, including why one is a stakeholder. • List who the stakeholders in your life are, explaining their relationships to you. • Discuss how you have followed stakeholder theory in treating others. *Integrate Kant’s second categorical imperative here—define it, and explain how you’ve followed it/plan to follow it, that is how you have/plan to treat the stakeholders in your life as ends in themselves and not means to your ends. OPTION C: Internal Identity • Explain Claxton’s argument for what I called in class internal identity. • Discuss your internal identity, your ethical values, your core of identity that you live. (Do not slip into external identity of having achieved a position for the sake of the position, wealth, material possessions, etc.) Explain why external identity is a false identity, and why you choose to address your internal identity in your ethical will. • Discuss the legacy you hope to leave with those important in your life, a legacy based upon internal identity, and not material goods.
