4.1 Reading Strategy Analysis Study the following journal article (available as an e-journal via UEL Athens): Smith, F., Hardman, F. & Higgins, S. (2007) Gender inequality in the primary classroom: will interactive whiteboards help? Gender and Education, 19(4), 455-469. Study the text, using whatever strategies you find useful. Then discuss three of the strategies that you used. Note: You are not required to detail a general range of reading strategies. You should describe three of those that you used in reading the text. You should contextualise your commentary by giving examples from the text where you have used specific strategies, and state the rationale for their use. This section must be between 400 and 500 words 4.2 Selecting appropriate sections of a text Having read the text, select four quotations – such as, a short passage, statement or fact - that you would wish to quote in a piece of writing. Write four sentences, each of which includes a quote. Show your understanding of the correct form of referencing from a source. This section must be no more than 150 words 4.3 Text Summary Look at the abstract in Smith, Hardman and Higgins (2007). Write a summary of the abstract, describing the key points in between 80 and 90 words. 4.4 Identifying the conventions of academic writing Discuss the conventions of academic writing, using the above text in your examples, focusing on the following points: <!--[if !supportLists]-->· <!--[endif]-->What is the purpose of the text? Does it seek to persuade, inform, entertain or advise? Does it fulfil its purpose and if not what improvements could be made? <!--[if !supportLists]-->· <!--[endif]-->Who was the text written for? What is the relationship between writer and reader? What features suggest this? What background knowledge does the writer assume? Are there any other assumptions? <!--[if !supportLists]-->· <!--[endif]-->How is the text presented? Is it consistent in style and presentation? Is it formal or informal? What features tell you this? <!--[if !supportLists]-->· <!--[endif]-->How does the choice of vocabulary, sentence length, structure, formatting, enable you to identify the style of the text? For example, is it formal, informal, general, specialist etc? Are there conventions for this style or type and if so are they followed? <!--[if !supportLists]-->· <!--[endif]-->Why is it effective? If it is ineffective, how could it be improved? Finally, write a concluding paragraph that summarises your main findings. This section must be between 400 and 600 words
