This is a topic for a college application. The accomplishment I want to write about is my participation in hurdling, varsity sport. Below is what I have written. I hear the cheering of my teammates in the stands; I start to pump my arms faster and faster as the last hurdle approaches with great speed, lead leg hyper-extended trail leg bent to swing over it but it is no use, I do not win the race but I gave it my all. Sometimes goals seem extraordinarily monumental as you try to visualize the task, but if you break it down into smaller goals it becomes much more manageable. My biggest goal last year was to win CIF’s for the 110 hurdles sprint and I made my way up to masters, more than half way there to winning the CIF Individual Championship Title. A mix of both hard work and commitment lent a hand to my biggest achievement ever. It was my first year on the track team and I rightfully earned my spot on the varsity team for the hurdling team. I had no idea how I did it, track practice lasted until 6:30 everyday giving me minimal time to work on school work as I got home, not to mention having to eat dinner, shower, and sleep early for another day’s practice. I have always been a busy body, always wanting to get out and do something but I do not know why it took me two years before joining track to actually join it and commit myself to it. At first, I dreaded track and was reluctant to have it as my sixth period class; the coaches were hard, the workouts were deadly, everyone seemed to be more athletic, and I was out of shape. I fell multiple times suffering from scrapes knees, elbows, palms, everywhere you can name it; but I liked it and I didn’t know why. My event was the 110 hurdle sprint, and I made it my goal to become the CIF Individual Champion by the end of the year. I committed 25 hours after school to hurdling everyday Track and Field was in season. I quickly gained the respect of my teammates and made the varsity team. The hardest part was to gather the courage to tell my friends “no” each time they asked me to ditch practice we so could hangout. My friends were greatly outraged as I turned them down each time. I gained respect from others around me and from my friends as they watched me accomplishing each small goal towards my main goal. With a mix of hard work and commitment I believe you are able to achieve anything you set your mind to, so I look forward to hurdling again, this year.
