Format of a Project Report that uses quantitative analysis: 1 Title page This should show the title of the course, the year and (very important) the title of your project, which should indicate the subject under investigation. 2 Contents list Identify main section headings and page numbers. 3 Abstract A short paragraph (c.100 words) summarising your report. This should be written when you have finished the rest of the report to summarise your project once completed. It is not meant to be an introduction but a summation. 4 Introduction The area of interest: what the project is about, with some reference to theories about the general question area under consideration in your project. You should refer to the usual kind of material: academic articles, books, mass media, and perhaps sources such as Social Trends, General Household Survey or British Social Attitudes, if appropriate. Your hypothesis (the relationship you set out to investigate or test) and how this follows from, or links to, the literature and secondary data referred to above. 5 Method (please choose a sampling method for eg quota, or anything you feel is best suitable and a use questionnaires) (devise 10 questions). • Questionnaire design, interviews, how your concepts were operationalised. • Type of sample (non-representative, quota) and how it was achieved. • Any ethical issues, sensitive topics, problems of access or refusals. Within this report please design at questionnaire with ten questions relating to the topic in question and then use SPSS to analyse it 6 Initial Results (concentrate on frequencies here) Describe your sample: the characteristics of the survey sample (e.g., age, gender, or other ''independent'' variables that are relevant). Describe your initial findings: select the key dependent variables and simply report on how many (or what percentage) of respondents said what. Give your reader a ‘feel’ of what sort of respondents you have. 7 Analysis Your main findings: (i.e. interesting or significant relationships between your independent and dependent variables, or amongst your dependent variables). Analysis of these findings (Do they support or refute the hypothesis; evidence which suggests why this is the case; other, perhaps unanticipated, results) Your analysis of qualitative interview material should always include direct quotes from your respondents. Give a fictitious name at the end of the quote and in your Appendix give the biographical details of the person (age, gender marital status, social class, occupation, ethnicity etc). You should give all these details in the Appendix that describes your quota sample- see below. • Indent any quotes from interview data by about 3 or 4 spaces so that they stand out in the text. Don’t expect quotes to speak for themselves! Draw out of the quote the point you think is being made by using it and discuss this.
