Your tasks 1. Familiarise yourself with the data, by looking at what variables are included in the dataset, for example which variables are string and which numeric, what the variables measure, etc. 2 Select six variables for further analysis. You must choose variables for which it would be appropriate to derive measure of central tendency and standard deviation. Use SPSS to produce frequency tables and descriptive statistics for each variable and print out your results. 3. Write a brief report on the procedures used and on the results, commenting upon what conclusions you might draw about the shape of the data from the distribution of values for each variable. You should include a simple pie chart or simple bar chart for each of the variables. 4. Now choose two variables which you think might be related. For example, we might hypothesize that ‘Daily Calorie Intake’ might be related to ‘Life Expectancy’. Consider what you might do, using the knowledge you have gained so far, to being to explore any such relationships. For example, you might recode the data for the variables you have chosen and then run a cross-tabulation. You might want to identify sub-groups of cases, using the Select Cases procedure. You can use any of the data manipulation techniques covered so far in this course. You are NOT expected to demonstrate an understanding of the use of measures of association in bivariate analysis. 5. Again, write a brief report of the procedures you have used, explaining your choices and commenting on the conclusions which you think are indicated by your results. 6. Your report of all parts of the assignment should be about 3000 words: this excludes charts and tables.
