A.Description This course is designed to acquaint students with history,culture,and social values of society as they are portrayed in Literature.Literature portrays not only the & amp;quot;ideals & amp;quot; of society: it portrays the relationships of the people to their relations,friends and goverment of the time.Students will be challenged to analyze these relationships and comment upon cultural and human aspects of the societies that created the works. B.Prerequisites English 110 C.Textbooks & amp;quot;Doctor Faustus & amp;quot;by Chistopher Marlowe( Norton Critical Edition)ISBN:0393977544 & amp;quot; Gulliver`s Travels & amp;quot;by Jonathan Swift.Signet Classics-ISBN:0451527321 D.Objectives This course places major emphasis on providing students with further opportunites to develop their critical- thinking skills, to pursue lifelong goals of personal enrichment,and to parcipitate as informed members of society.While reading a variety of literary works, students will learn more strategies to comprehend, interpret, and evaluate such works.They will also debate major political and social issues in class and develop their writing skills in their papers. E.Course requirements 1.CLASS PARTICIPATION:Active participation is required.Oral comrehension and expression are integeral components of this course. 2.ASSIGNMENTS:Response papers to your readings-not summaries but rather personal reflections on the day`s assignment. 3.TESTING:The final will be a research paper(8-10 pages)on one of the topics discussed.It must contain at least two of the works read during the semester as well a a proper bibliography and outside sourses on the topic. The thesis for the paper must be submitted for approval.Thesis is part of the final paper grade. The paper must be in correct MLA format to receive a full grade.
