(C) What did you do to accomplish your achievement? Describe specific planning, goals, steps including your leadership role to make the accomplishment successful. (150 words ONLY)
Through my excellence and dedication I was able to accomplish my goal. I had demonstrated the commitment towards becoming a leader in the community and the dojang and that’s how I was nominated into the Leadership Program.
(D) What challenges did you face? How did you meet those challenges?
(200 words ONLY)
At three years of age, I was very excited about being able to attend pre-school. I had a chance to make new friends and meet phenomenal teachers. However, I encountered a problem that would deter my path of educational development; I could not speak. When I would open my mouth, the words would not come out. Unable to have verbal communication with my family and friends was very frustrating. My school recommended that my parents take me to a speech specialist for fear that I had speech impairment. The specialist evaluated me and determined that I indeed had speech impairment.
On a search for the cause of this complication, the idea of prenatal development came up. Doctors told my mother who later told me that while I was in the womb, I was exposed to substances. Those substances later affected my abilities to develop my speech and language skills. After my speech impairment and cause was established, I was removed from pre-school and placed into a special-education school.
My parents always told me that I was a strong person and refused to let this predicament get the best of me. My parent’s supportive words were “work hard and you’ll succeed.” As years passed, I overcame challenges and faced new ones. I pushed myself and I made such progress that I was later able to attend regular school as long as I continued with therapy. Finishing grade school has changed my outlook on life. I learned how to be outgoing, creative, and persistent and how to use my strengths to balance my weakness. I have learned how to interact with people of different cultures and backgrounds by being exposed to both special classes as well as normal classes.
My past challenges have prepared me to move forward with a positive attitude. In college, I plan to major in animal science and pre-veterinary. I would be a great asset to my community and the world because my goal is to be a mouthpiece to animals. Many animals are searching for a leader and that person is I. I have learned all about true leadership through my martial arts karate team, which teaches sportsmanship, hard work, teamwork and most important, the ability to help others in need. I am inquisitive; I love learning and exploring new grounds. I know that I am fit for the course that I am applying for; my life has prepped me for it. My compassion, knowledge, and determination are the basis for my promise to improve lives of these animals. Attending your university is my next step in reaching my goals. I believe I have all it takes to be a part of your citadel of learning and I will forever be grateful if I am accepted to study my heart’s desire at your university. I ensure that I am in no way limited by the impairment of my childhood, so I shall press forward without looking back.
(E) What impact did your achievement have on you personally? What impact, if any, did your achievement have on your family? Your school? And community? (150 words ONLY)
The impact that my achievement had on my personally was good sportsmanship, hard work, teamwork and most of all, the ability to help others in need. In my community I would say I play a leadership role to my younger siblings. I feel it is my duty as an older sister to show him that he can do anything that he puts his mind to as well as having an education is the right way to do it. As far as school goes, due to the fact that a structure of respect is built into karate, I can develop the ability to listen and learn and achieve within a highly regulated environment. This provides to be an excellent reinforcement of study techniques for my school habits.
