Provide rational for choice of topic (am doing foundation degree to become assistant practitioner in district nursing). Module is designed to provide nurses with an understanding of the research process, study designs and methods of data collection in order to develop critical appraisal skills. Identify 2 original research articles that use different research methods, outline search process. Demonstrate accurate analysis of research/data collection methods. Demonstrate understanding of main findings/how relate to aims of study. Critically evaluate both with ref to appropriateness of research method, any potential sources of error & bias, ethical and prof issues, generalisability/applicability of findings and relevance to practice. NOT permitted to use 2 articles that use same overall research method (e.g. survey)but have used different designs within that method (eg cannot use cross-sectional survey and a longitudinal survey) Intro 300 words, critical evaluation 2400, conclusion & relevance to practice, recommendations for practice, education or research 300 words approx. Articles MUST be included in appendix and be primary research papers published within last 10 years and selected from health or social care journals using electronic data bases. Assessment criteria: primary research criteria, critical appraisal skills, appreciation of qualitative, quantitative and critical research designs, research question, data collection and analysis. Some understanding of statistics. Appreciation of EBP in the context of care. Ethical and professional issues applied to research.
