In your semester project, you will examine the history of a law or legal concept addressed during the class; specifically, your goal is to flesh out the Biblical and/or religious origins of the law. For example, if you were analyzing the laws governing intentional torts, you might discuss relevant passages of scripture and the history of their application in legal systems. Keep in mind that many legal concepts originate from church declarations and canon law, and often (but not always) such ordinances contained biblical foundations. I) Where and when does this concept first enter written legal codes? How has the law developed over time? Trace its historical development in your paper, moving from past to present. Note that jumping from Biblical times straight to U.S. History will not suffice. Keep in mind that even the U.S. borrowed the common-law tradition of the English courts. II) Does the concept come directly from Biblical law, or does it simply borrow biblical ideas? Be sure to reference all relevant passages of scripture. III) How is this concept applied in modern society? Does it still retain its Biblical significance, or has it been secularized? Analyze the topic from your own perspective.
