MIDTERM EXAM: 25% of Final Grade In Joy Harjo’s IN MAD LOVE AND WAR compare and contrast, in essay form, two poems. Use TWO poetic terms (listed below) for the comparison and contrast. This will allow you to have in-depth analysis of the two poems. The first poem is assigned and is called ‘We Must Call A Meeting’ on pages 9-10. The second poem is your choice. But you must choose a poem from Joy Harjo’s book. Use a very clear thesis and organization framework for comparing and contrasting the two poems. Remember, support your comparison and contrast text passages, phrases, and/or selected words from the poems with analysis. This process is similar to what we have been doing in the discussion board but on a more detailed level. Kindly remember that your analysis needs to make up at least 75 percent of the exam. Choose from the poetic terms listed below for the comparison and contrast: 1. Form: a few possibilities are: minimal to mystical, confessional, lyrical, metaphysical, classical measures, repetitive phrasing, etc 2. Theme(s) 3. Language: colloquial, consonance, assonance, organic—free verse, etc 4. Tone/Mood 5. Effectiveness of similes, metaphors and analogies 6. Alliteration 7. Rhyme and meter/used fully, partially, or lack of it 8. Personification 9. Symbolism IMPORTANT: The goal of this midterm examination is for you to bring your understanding, experience, knowledge and insight to bear in analyzing two of Ms. Harjo’s poems. Your analysis is what is most important. No Research is Allowed. GRADE: Your grade will be based upon the clarity and depth of your writing and analysis. Proper grammar and sentence structure clarity are mandatory. Clearly organize your essay. FORMAT Midterm Exam should be double-spaced and have the pages numbered.
