Circumstances of Case – Jane was a twenty-seven year old single girl who lived with her parents and worked as a librarian. She had a steady boyfriend, to whom she had recently become engaged, and was planning to get married four months after her disappearance. Discovery of the body – Watership Common is known locally as a bird sanctuary and beauty spot. Members of the public reported a fire on the Common to police early on Thursday 17th July 2008. The weather was fine and there were a number of people about in the area. The fire was located about 30 yards from the road and was reported because of concerns that it might get out of control. When firemen attended they found a severely charred, unclothed female body at the centre of the fire. Tests later showed that petrol had been used as an accelerant for the fire. The seat of the fire was around the lower abdominal and genital regions of the body. The body’s head was covered by a charred piece of cardboard, underneath which was a green scarf which was also covering the head. Removing this revealed a pair of tights tied tightly around the neck. Surrounding the body were a number of metal eyelets – the remains of something like a tarpaulin covering. There were no indications that the body had been lying there for any great length of time. No apparent attempt had been made to conceal the body in its surroundings, which was in relatively open woodland with unobstructed views of the area from the adjacent road. The body was identified from DNA and dental records as that of Jane Smith. Circumstances of disappearance – Jane was last seen on Wednesday 24th May 2008. She lived about fifteen miles away from Watership Common in a detached house in a quiet residential part of the market town of Bletchingham. She had spent the afternoon with her fianc & #233;, Mark Jones, who was the same age as herself and worked as an accountant in Council offices near to the library where Jane worked. They had been looking at possible properties for purchase or rent after they were married. She returned home and changed into casual clothing before going out for the evening. She told her parents that she was meeting up with female friends from work, although she never arrived at the rendezvous venue. She was last seen at 6.30 pm and at that time was wearing blue denim jeans, a blue and white striped sweater, red court shoes and a matching shoulder bag. She was also wearing tights, bra and knickers. She was carrying her credit cards and her mobile phone. Her parents reported her as a missing person when she failed to return home overnight. Police enquiries confirmed that her friends had expected to meet up with her and that it was most unusual for her not to phone and let them know if she was going to be delayed. Meeting up with her was a regular event for them and Jane would normally catch a bus from her home to the town centre before walking for ten minutes to the pub where they normally met. She was a friendly girl, perhaps a little shy in manner, and was thought of as sensible and not prone to panic or risk-taking behaviours. A police search discovered a red shoe, similar to hers, discarded in a waste bin on a street that was on a direct route from the central bus station to the rendezvous pub. There was no CCTV coverage of the area as, although there was a camera point covering the street, the camera had been taken away for repair a week previously.
