As you begin writing for your book report, here are a few tips that you should follow in order to have a great book report. Start early to avoid last minute rush! Think about the meaning and significance of what you are reading. Follow the logical sequences and cause-and-effect relationship of events. It is VITAL and of GREAT IMPORTANCE that you write your report in your own words. Do not paraphrase. Express your understanding of the book in your OWN words, using quotes only to support and substantiate important and controversial points which you have made. Your book report MUST include the following: 1. A summary of the highlights of the subject matter which the book covers. 2. A discussion concerning particular issues or themes covered by the book which you found most interesting or most significant. Discuss these matters and your reaction to them. Please remember that your discussion should not become a launching point for expressing un-related or un-substantiated opinions. I am looking for originality and a thoughtful response. 3. A concluding paragraph should draw together all the loose ends concerning the most important facts and understanding, which you have gotten from doing the report. Discuss your personal thoughts about the book, whether favorable or unfavorable. Discuss how the book influences your thinking or your goals in life, and use examples from the book to support your statements. What was the author’s perspective, frame of reference, or presupposition? Did you agree or disagree? Why or why not? The book report MUST be at least six (6) to eight (8) typewritten, double-spaced pages, using font size 12, not larger. Be sure your report is written in APA format. It must include a TITLE PAGE, ABSTRACT and REFERENCE PAGE. ALL book reports MUST be uploaded on WebCT by the deadline of April 18, 2008. If you miss the deadline, 2 points will be deducted EACH DAY! NO EMAILED BOOK REPORTS WILL BE ACCEPTED! Whenever using the words of the author or anyone else, always give credit to that person by referencing correctly (using APA format in the body of the text). Failure to give credit is academic dishonesty.
