ESSAY TOPIC(cont.): Using 1+ tales read this semester,examine the above quote in more detail. What is it about horror and cruelty that is so fascinating in these tales,so fascinating to us? Why are sex and violence such common themes (even if occasionally edited out—Maria Tatar argues that these "hard-core" elements are still present in more subtle form in many of the Grimms’ tales[Tatar 38ff])? Why would we want—even need—fairy tales to offer "exaggerated visions" of our "grim" real and fantasy worlds? Through a close reading of one or more tales,and using secondary literature assigned during the semester,develop a specific thesis based on the above points and use it to explore the relationship between fairy tales and us in more depth. You can work with any of the tales read thus far; recommend limiting the number of tales analyzed to 3 (although you may choose to focus only on one tale). Please be sure to provide evidence for your arguments in the form of specific references to the text/s you discuss.
