I am a student at Manchester University, UK and my research is on social networking. It includes the research on "why do people use these sites?". The research should specifically highlight two sites: facebook and orkut. Since, I am from India, my supervisor wants me study my networks on both orkut and facebook and then analyse each of them. I joined orkut about 3 years back and I joined facebook after coming to UK for studies, which is last year. The research should answer the following questions: 1) How are these sites used for friendship formation? 2) What are the effects of co-location? (How things have changed since I moved here? do I orkut as frequently as I used to do in India? do I communicate with my friends back in india as much as did when I was actually there?) 3) Compare and contrast the social activity on both sites? 4) How much time do people spend on networking sites? 5) How technology differ from people that are on SNS (social networking sites) and people that are not on SNS. 6) How are the different social networking sites characterized based on the nature of their operation, features, and function? 7) How can the use of social networking sites change the process of social interaction of its user? 8) How can social networking sites shape the user’s way of life? 9) Is participating in a social networking site helping the user in the process of developing relationships with his or her peer contacts? 10) Privacy and security issues involved in SNS? Now, my supervisor asked me to prepare a questionnaire and do the survey.
