WRITING PROMPT BACKGROUND Your local school board has been looking into mandatory year-round schooling for high school students. This would consist of a revolving schedule that has students attending school for nine weeks, then off three weeks with an extended summer break of five weeks. The state has decided to allow local school boards to decide whether to implement this plan. Clearly there are advantages and disadvantages to this issue. WRITING PROMPT As a student, write a letter to the Commissioner of Education in your state OR to your county''s Superintendent of Education about your ideas and thoughts in response to the proposal. Begin your letter with your position on the issue and give reasons for your stand. For each reason, give specific examples either from your research or from your own experience. The more personalized this letter is, the more persuasive it will be. GUIDELINES FOR THE LETTER I. It must be written in correct business letter format: Heading, Inside address, Salutation (punctuated with a colon), 5 paragraphs single spaced with double spacing between, closing, signature. II.
