Instructions for the required paper on Juvenile Delinquency Theory The mission of this paper is to get you to read two or three articles by a particular scholar in the juvenile delinquency field in order to gain an understanding of how a theorist and researcher wrestles with the issues in the field. First: Pick a theorist. That scholar must have at two or three peer-reviewed, journal articles on the subject of juvenile delinquency or juvenile crime theory. The scholar should be someone who has developed, expanded, or integrated theories or juvenile crime. If you are interested in a particular kind of juvenile crime, pick a theorist who works in that area. I am providing you with a list of theorists. I have also noted those theorist who have at least two articles that you can read online using the library’s databases (such as ProQuest, WilsonSelect, JSTOR, etc.) journal search – if you wish to do your reading online. If you have another theorist that you would like to research, please talk to me and let’s make sure that she or he is a choice that will allow you to meet the requirements of the assignment. Second: Review the questions to be covered in the paper. Questions: 1. What theory does the scholar have about juvenile crime or some aspect of delinquency? 2. Does the author draw on the work of others? Look at the literature review sections and see if the author builds, integrates, or even criticizes the work of other theorists. 3. Is the author proposing a theory or does he or she also conduct research to attempt to test the theory? 4. If the author conducts research, what are the major findings of the research? If the author does not conduct research, what does he or she do to support his/her theory (this could involve calling for research, reviewing the research of others, framing a research agenda and so on.) 5. What impact could this scholarly work have on public policy? Note: within the paper, you must use one direct quote from each article. Look for important phrases and ideas as you read. Second stage of your paper: Draft an outline Outline: The outline should: o identify the author you have chosen, o the titles of the two or three articles you are using, o a list of the 5 questions that need to be covered in the paper and, under each, a few key phrases that capture the main aspects of the answer as it relates to your theorist. This draft should be word-processed (typed.) It should look like an outline: phrases and bullet points, but not long narrative. Since it is in outline form you may single space the paper.
