This is a Philosophy Essay for a Topic called ''Knowing Minds'', an essay taloired to suit a philosophical style would be most appropriate. The coarse is essentially about the way we relate to each other as individual minds and more importantly how we come to understand others and their thoughts and ideas. This coarse deals with mind reading not in the spiritual sense but how we as humans are able to predict how others will act in certain situations. ''Mindreading'' is a psychological capacity exhibited by most adults. It consists of the ability to do three things— 1. Predict behaviour. 2. Attribute mental states. 3. Explain behaviour Intro....... Here we are looking at some ideas about the architecture of the mind This is not about mind-reading alone but will have implications for it and its underlying mechanisms A basic distinction here is between: -Unitary, and -Modular architectures Unitary Architectures....... In the early years of AI and Cognitive Psychology, a unitary architecture inspired by that of von Neumann machines was commonly assumed for the mind as well as the computer Here, apart from input and output states, there are only homogeneous ‘central’ states, in control, working memory and long-term memory systems In a sense, on this sort of model all properly cognitive states are central states Modular Architectures....... In these, there are one or two key differences: Typically the input (perceptual) and output (motor) ‘edges’ become transducers plus genuinely cognitive, ‘modules’ Some aspects of central cognition also may be seen as modular If this second difference is sufficiently thorough-going, we have a ‘massive modularity’ thesis Fodor and Modularity........
