In this module you are to show that not only can you evaluate pedagogic materials but also that you personally can design original, interesting, engaging and pedagogically sound English language teaching materials for a specified client group of students, i.e. that as well as being original, interesting, engaging and pedagogically sound, the materials you design are age- appropriate, level- appropriate and culturally and socially appropriate for your specified learners. Your original materials need to be designed around the strong or weak version of the Communicative Approach and may be based on Task Based Learning (TBL). At some point they need to focus the students'' attention on language form (Vocabulary, Grammar Structures, Functions, Pronunciation) but this focus on form may be embedded in some form of integrated skills work. There should be a productive focus at some point in the proceedings. This productive focus should, at some point, have a genuine communicative intent and require a genuine negotiation of meaning. At some stage of the proceedings the learner should receive some kind of feedback on their use of language. Each set of activities should be designed to last 45-60 mn. Each set of activities can focus on a single language point or combine 2 or more points from the following list: -Vocabulary -Grammar Structures -Functions -Pronunciation You need to provice FOUR different sets of materials, each one focussing predominantly on one of the areas of language listed above. In addition to the materials you need to provide DETAILED teachers notes explaining how to use the materials and suggested timings and procedures for exploiting the materials. You may like to provide this information in the form of a lesson plan but you are not obliged to. In addition to the MATERIALS and the ACCOMPANYING teachers'' notes, you need to give an evaluative critique of the materials you designed. In this you will explain the underlying methodological theories that underpin your design choices and you will evaluate the effectiveness of the end result in terms of the materials you designed. This critique should be predominantly analytic and evaluative, using evidence based argumentation. It should NOt be predominantly descriptive. There should be a lot of overt Theory/practise links in the critique. It may be helpful to say where the main influences for your material design came from (e.g. the style of a particular course book; in-house materials available in your placement institution (Skills for Life/Headways/UK ESL materials only; activity types your students seem to respond well to; activity types you enjoy using in class etc.) NOTES: -There is very little need or no need at all for quoting/referencing. This must sound like you PERSONALLY designed your own materials, based on a Communicative Approach. You can''t use existing materials but it may be inspired from some, as long as it is not obvious. It has to be unique, creative and personal. All materials (exercise sheets, Students'' sheets, pictures, tape scripts, must be provided as well). -You do not need to make lesson plans but you notes must inculde all the following information: Level, Time, Aims, Anticipated Problems & amp;amp;Anticipated Solutions Stage of lesson, Activity,Timing, Interaction (Teacher/Students-Students/Students etc), Reason/Aims for activity. LAYOUT for one lesson: -Copies of all materials created and used for this lesson -One page 45-60mn Lesson plan/Detailed teacher''s notes on how to use these materials. -One page evaluation of the materials We need 4 lessons, that is 4 lesson plans/details Teacher''s notes, 4 sets of original materials and 4 evaluations of these materials.
