The commentary should follow these guideline. •introduction (setting the poem in context, both historically and in terms of Holderlins career, including its relationship to any other Holderlins poems you have studied). •an analysis of the theme(s) and content of the poem, as it develops throughout. •an analysis of i) the formal structure of the poem (ballad, ode, free verse, stanzas, rhyme patterns etc) and ii) its ‘musicality’(but do not just list devices – e.g. stress patterns, alliteration, assonance etc. – without showing how they contribute to a particular effect). a consideration of the language, style and other relevant linguistic/formal aspects of the scene (e.g.: are there any relevant observations to be made about rhyme or rhythm, register, which emotions are expressed through the use of language, are there any guiding images and metaphors, important contrasts and oppositions etc.). Is Holderlin adhering to or breaking away from traditional forms and techniques, or both? also comment on the relationship between the themes and style of this poem and/or aspects of late eighteenth resp. early nineteenth-century German culture. Don’t fall into the trap of just listing devices without demonstrating how they contribute to an effect
