Assignment overview The purpose of studying the theories of Carl Rogers is to understand and apply interpersonal learning and communication skills in order to build group cohesiveness in tense and often difficult situations. Rogers believed that his approach to interpersonal and, perhaps, group conflict can defplate or ease tensions stemming from even the deepest emotions. Direction: Based on the work of the psychotherapist, Carl Rogers, choose a social problem and apply the principle of Rogerian argument in your resolution to this problem. Rogerian Organization 1. After providing a brief attention-grabbing introduction, describe the complexity and difficulty of the problem and indicate that a dialogue is possible and indeed beneficial among groups with differing opinions; give historical or current examples. Be as objective as possible as you describe the problem. 2. Then, present the views of “the other side” with a keen understanding and an insightful thoroughness that would satisfy them; impress them with knowledge you possess but do so with modesty and good nature; remember: a key component of Rogerian argument is your own ethos: your good will and ethical character will go along way in persuading your audience and allaying hostility. As you present “their side,” remember to make concession to their arguments based on how valid their arguments are. Concessions often build good relationship between disagreeable groups by locating common ground (and you also avoid the fallacy of suppressing evidence). 3. Then, discuss the values you share with them in an attempt to find common value; be courteous-remember your ethos. Your goal here is to help them see how much you may have in common despite your differences. You may concede that differences are a healthy and necessary when living in a democracy- that diversity of thought is a welcome condition of living in America. Finding common ground is a good place to begin a discussion of differences. Then, transition into… 4. Your side. Present your argument- but, again, do so wirh mild vigor and great tact as a starting point. Put your thesis here (claim + reason + solution). But before you present your strongest evidence, you may wish to address some of the “other side’s” weaker argument (arguments that violate logic, good sense, ethics, etc.) and refute them without attacking them. Then, present your strongest arguments with great sensitivity and with great care. Show them why your arguments are more valid, more viable, and perhaps even uphold some kind of scared value or promote some kind of greater good. Remember: be specific; give good, viable examples based on research. 5. Conclusion: do not merely summarize your points.
