Brief for Individual report The purpose of your report is to analyse the external and internal environment of your chosen organisation, to identify the major challenges facing the organisation and provide a plan for leadership and management as a means of addressing one of the issues identified. This should be done through utilising some of the environmental models discussed in the classroom sessions (e.g. SWOT, competencies, PEST, PESTLE,). You can add another model (s) if you wish and/or merge existing models to create further variation. This can include models from other modules e.g. value chain analysis. Porter’s five forces model is also referenced in the ‘monitoring the environment’ session and can be included as well. Once you has identified the most significant opportunities and threats facing the organisation (and provided justification), critically discuss leadership and within your chosen organisation (as a means of enabling continuous improvement through, empowerment, innovation, flexibility, responsiveness, entrepreneurialism, participation and enhancing customer relations) with regard to one issue related to the identified weaknesses, opportunities and threats facing the organisation (N.B. select only one issue that may relate to the opportunities, threats and weaknesses). The report should then provide, in the form of recommendations, a coherent organisational plan for effective leadership and management (if appropriate, clearly illustrating how structure, culture, leadership style etc can facilitate effective leadership and management in relation to the chosen issue). The report should conclude by critically evaluating how leadership impacts on organisational success and thus allow the organisation to take steps towards meeting the challenge previously identified. The report provides you with the opportunity to explore the use of models and the application of theory to practice in a group. You will then use the knowledge and skills developed from the group presentations in writing your individual report. N.B. Ideally in presenting information you first need to briefly explain what type of organisation you are focusing on: e.g. its size, location, service/production orientation and if relevant which particular aspects of the organisation you are going to consider. For example, if Virgin were your chosen organisation you might decide to focus on Virgin Airlines or Virgin Media or the organisation as a whole. Whatever you do there must be a reason but make it manageable.
