ITM 524 CM As before, the Case for this module asks you to prepare a three to five page essay using the writing style, format and referencing methods described in the course Graded Activities and Writing Guides (see the Module One Required Supplemental readings). A key organizational dynamic which influences an IT manager''s success is the concept of 360 degree organizational communication. Beyond this, the Module Three Homepage introduction to organizational dynamics, particularly communicating as an IT manager, noted that both written and oral professional communication profit from solid organization and delivery. You have been provided a number of keen readings which speak to various important aspects of written (seen Module One) and oral communications (see Module Three readings). The Module Three Case assignment will put your knowledge of these important concepts and skill areas to the test. In this light, consider that the IT Director has called you into his/ her office and described a major improvement project which should have important competitive benefits for the organization (note, if you are new to IT, simply substitute an organizational project familiar to you). The boss indicates that other departments within the organization have recently, or are even now, submitting budget requests for projects they also consider very important. In this light, all departments will be meeting with the corporate finance/ budget analysis committee shortly to review potential project funding. Your boss has decided on a two-step response to this opportunity. First, he/ she desires to develop a written request highlighting the project and its likely organizational contributions. Second, he/ she will use this preliminary document as a ''talking piece'' in the later face-to-face interaction with the finance/ budget committee. In three to five pages you are to produce a draft of the budget request document. Then, in an addendum, outline the structure of a solid oral presentation for your boss to use in presenting face-to-face to the committee. Remember, the purpose of both items is to nail down this important piece of IT funding. In this case paper, use enough prospective project details to provide basic meaning...but, your primary focus is to be on the elements of persuasive communication. Take care NOT to simply copy over the bare bones bullet points highlighted in your readings. Your paper''s title might be: The Critical Operational/ Strategic Need for XYZ IT Project (subtitled: an influential communications approach) In your essay, you may wish to consider: • The essential elements of influential written and oral communication and noted in your readings as well as the Module''s One and Three Home Pages • How short, sweet and influential communication will compete well for IT budget dollars • How do you sway financial folks into appreciating the competitive value of this project and its potential contribution to the organization?s bottom line • The validity of Ocam''s Razor (please look this term up in Wikipedia) Please note these issues ARE NOT questions to be lined up and answered with bullet points. They are simply things to think about as you formulate you own ideas about the topic. The expectation is that you will create an original paper, in narrative form, from your own unique views.
