An important component of emotional intelligence that goes hand-in-hand with being a dynamic leader is the ability to recognize and feel the emotions of other people. This core aspect of emotional intelligence is better known as empathic intelligence. According to Goleman, empathy is the fundamental “people skill” (p.43). For example, consider phrases like, “how do you feel, today” or “my feelings have been hurt.” These simple phrases can seem trite or even meaningless to some and probably have been used at one time or another by practically all of us. Beyond any rational reasoning some of us may use or hear these phrases without comprehending the true or hidden feelings behind them. On the other hand, if we become more aware of our own emotions we will probably better understand the feeling side of intelligence and be better equipped to handle difficult situations that may arise. Understanding empathic intelligence as well as understanding our own capacity to feel may mean the difference in mediocrity and excellence in the day to day interactions with the human race. Empathy, the feeling side of intelligence plays a crucial role to its counterpart which is reasoning. Human intelligence might be broken down into two components. The first component would be that of reasoning. The second component would be feeling. This second part is where our emotions and feelings come into play. Similarly, if we mere mortals are smart and savvy enough we soon realize just how important both reasoning and feeling are to each other and how in concert they help us to become more effective, caring and emotionally intelligent human beings. In the world of emotional intelligence it is often believed that reasoning void of feeling can be problematic and counterintuitive to those in leadership roles. A successful leader must have the ability to lead, not only with reason but also with feeling. Similarly, a dynamic leader is aware of the feelings of others. An empathic leader has the ability to identify with the feelings and thoughts of his subjects. For example, a group facilitator leading a grief management class would be able to convey empathic responses to lessen a client’s anguish over the death of a loved one. Similarly, the facilitator would impart feelings of respect, genuine regard, and warmth to the client.
