Compares to other fancies in my closet, the unfit baggy blue T-shirt seems colorless and can never possibly raise a girl’s passion; however, for me, the value of this gift is beyond the combine of all the other fashioned clothes I have ever owned since the impact the gift giver left for me captured my soul, giving me a new understanding and pursuing of learning. I remember at the end of the year, when my U.S. History teacher, Mr. Fracchia gave this shirt to me, tears almost flew out of my eye pockets. Gazing at the four embroidered words “AP U.S.” on the plain colored shirt, the satisfactory of recognition replaced the embarrassment of the first day of this course when I, the new settler of America who only had associated with English for less than two years, didn’t even know the American fanatically worshipped American president, Abraham Lincoln. It took me overnight that day to finish Mr. Fracchia assigned fifty paged reading. On the next day, I felt disappointed when he didn’t give us a reading quiz or inquire a few questions about the material or even just mention about the homework. Only after a few weeks, I finally realized that’s just his teaching method, his style. In his class, not only “homework checking” has never been mentioned, but also the phrase “taking note” never fortunately finds its space. Students never had a chance to complain the plentiful homework since it has never been like a despot’s pressure oppressed upon them like other teachers’ work. Mr. Fracchia never required any ink related homework, nor did he ever find certain ways to check his enormous reading assignment. When we received our progress reports, it’s always those self-conscious students who develop outstanding adaptabilities to study by themselves achieved well. Unlike other teachers who only concentrate on preachy textbooks, Mr. Fracchia always likes to remind us about the currently happened news. Most of the time, our tests include presidential election and other important events happened recently. Eventually, I developed the hobby of reading news. In spite of his dedication, his classes usually received the lowest average among all A.P. U.S. teachers’. Subsequently, harsh comments about him are ubiquitous. Students disparaged his way of teaching which is obviously not as “beneficial” as those authoritarian teachers’ pursuing tightly after for homework. It hurts me intensively when I found out I was the only one came to his after school A.P. tutoring class every Wednesday and even some of my best classmates went to other U.S. teachers’ review sessions. Despite of these depressing scorn, Mr. Fracchia never changes his principle, barely gives students extra credits opportunities or show any mercy toward those who are at the failing edges. The only incentive present he ever provided was the blue AP U.S. T-shirt, the only offer to the highest grade of his entire class. When he called my name on the day he granted the award, I was initially shocked. Only after a few seconds, when finally my ecstasy broke the astonishment concentrated in my mind, my spirit came back to myself. I kept saying “thank you” as both of my hands embraced the soft shirt. I’m sure most of my classmates were puzzled by my overreaction. Mr. Fracchia’s role as a competent teacher grew more and more lucid as I realized how much progress I made over the year. As the one who could only give me the map to the successful shore, Mr. Fracchia encourages me to depend myself experiencing the storm.
