Scenario You are a design and build contractor specialising in commercial buildings. A client wishes to build a 10 storey commercial building comprising 10 storeys of office accommodation together with a 4 storey basement parking provision. The site is an urban location with reasonable access. A site and soil investigation has been carried out which shows the soil strata to be unreliable down to a depth of 13 metres with ground water present at 6 metres. In the role of a contractor specialising in this form of construction you are brought in to the design process at an early stage to advise on the following. a) The various methods of soil support and ground water control available and the optimum methods that could be used. 25 Marks b) The methods of construction and water proofing applicable to this type of building. 25 Marks c) Construction of an insitu concrete frame with elements of precast work. Particular emphasis should be on weight saving methods of construction. 20 Marks Parts a) and b) will form one report with part c) as a separate report You are to present your work in a report format demonstrating a wide ranging in-depth and thoughtful analysis of the subject.
