HOW SELECTION OF A PROCURMENT STRATEGY CAN EFFECT THE DELIVERY OF A CONSTRUCTION PROJECT Project procurement is the process and procedure for clients to obtain or acquire construction product/s. Apart from the traditional approach, there are now other “fast-tracking” or innovative procurement systems used by the construction industry world wide. The different procurement systems differ from each other in terms of allocation of responsibilities, activities sequencing, process and procedure and organisational approach in project delivery. These differences have invariably affected the project performance. Project performance relates to the prescribed goals or objectives that form the project parameters / clients brief. There are many other elements that determine project success, but the focus of this paper is analysing how the selection of a procurement strategy can effect the critical parameters of project performance i.e. time, cost and quality. The aim of this paper is to look into the effect of the different procurement systems on the project performance. Since there are many different project procurement systems, it is appropriate for the purpose of this presentation to limit to the common ones i.e. traditional system, design and build and management contracting. General Dissertation Notes / structure (Must be incorporated) The script in general must be word processed using one and a half line spacing on A4 paper. The text should have a left hand margin of 40 mm to allow for binding and all other margins should be 20mm. Any direct quotations over three lines in length should be presented in single space text indented both sides. The work MUST be referenced consistently throughout the dissertation in the Harvard style. A typical example of a thesis structure and sequence is as follows: Chapter 1 - Introduction This chapter should show the context and purpose of the study - reasons for selecting the topic area and its context in terms of current national trends and relevant literature. It would normally include sub-sections related to background, aims and objectives, research design, and an outline of the structure of the dissertation. Chapters 2 & amp; 3 minimum - Literature review These chapters should review recent, relevant literature and be written in a critical and analytical manner. They should not appear to contain a purely narrative account of what is contained in other published material. They should not attempt to produce a comprehensive review of all that has been published in general about a topic. The literature review must not contain copied or closely paraphrased material from sources that are not acknowledged (No plagiarism). The literature review should also be used to identify issues or points that will be resolved or investigated in the data collection and analysis activities which are reported on in later sections of the dissertation. Chapter 4 - Research approach and data collection activities This chapter should discuss in detail the research undertaken and the reasons for undertaking it. It should discuss the proposed methodology and justify the methods adopted in relation to the philosophical perspective and the nature of the problem(s) chosen for investigation. It should aim to make explicit the process of the research undertaken so that others could repeat the investigation. The chapter should describe and justify in detail the procedures adopted in undertaking any data collection activities. The chapter should also present/describe the results of any data collection activities undertaken. It may be appropriate to present the results as a series of graphs using descriptive statistics with relatively little description or as a series of outline or conceptual models that require further refinement depending upon the type of data collected. Chapter 5 - Data analysis and discussion This chapter should take either the quantitative results reported in the previous chapter and apply further statistical analysis with the most appropriate results reported in the previous chapter and apply further inductive analysis in order to generate further critical discussion of the implications of the findings of the study in terms of the literature reviewed and the aims and objectives set for the dissertation. Chapter 6 - Conclusions, recommendations, limitations and reflections It should summarise each of the points made in the work and if appropriate set them against any hypotheses or propositions that were originally advanced in earlier sections of the dissertation. Any qualifications or limitations to the conclusions caused by the methodology adopted or the data obtained and analysed should be clearly stated and acknowledged.
