The ultimate goal of any Management Information System (MIS) is optimization (Jackson D. Ford 1987). An integrated MIS should achieve optimisation by performing the following three main functions for the organisation that it is applied into: a) Provide information across various departments b) Facilitate decision making at the three tire of management c) Serve as efficient means for managing business processes Organisations can either provide “service” or “manufactured goods” as their product or more commonly a combination of both. For this essay you are required to look at the application of integrated MIS in a “service” based and a “manufacturing” based organisation and analyse how this has helped them to improve their performance in the context of the three main functions defined for an integrated MIS above. This is a 3000 word essay and counts 30% of your final grade for the “IT Management” module. The format of your assignment should be as follow: Font type and size: Arial 12 Line separation: 1.5 Referencing: Harvard Marking Scheme for this essay: Framing the study 15% Literature review 20% Critical analysis 30% Strength of argumentation 20% Presentation 15% Framing the study (20% - 700 words) Students will gain credit for laying a strong logical foundation for their essay. For example providing definition for key words such as “Value”, “added value”, “Optimisation” will be credited. Brief explanation of analytical models such as the “value chain” or “five force analysis” will be credited. Literature review (30% - 1000 word) Students will gain credit for providing a brief review of one manufacturing organisation and one service organisation who has strategically used some form of Information System to improve their performance (10% each) OR A brief review of one organisation which provides both manufactured goods and also services who has strategically used some form of Information System to improve its manufacturing and service performance (20%) Critical analysis (35% - 1300 word) Credit will be awarded to critical analysis of the literature review through the lenses of analytical models and definitions provided in the “Framing the study”. Students should explain “how” the strategic implementation of Information Systems has improved the business performance of the organisation(s) of their choice. Presentation, structure and referencing 15% Credit will be given to the presentation (5%), structure (5%) and referencing (5%). NOTE: So in this essay i need an organisation which it compulsorily should have both “manufacturing and Service” based organisation and its analysis.
