Choose 5 of the 8 following themes: 1. Site Investigation and execution of a contract 2. Earthworks 3. Additives for concrete. 4. Compaction and Soil Stabilisation. 5. Piling Underpinning and Piled Foundations 6. Environmentally friendly Civil Engineering 7. Civil Engineering and poverty Alleviation (possibly labour intensive construction). 8. Modern Materials in Civil Engineering. For each theme chosen review a recent civil engineering project (from the UK or overseas). For technology based themes you must cover the concepts and civil engineering principles adopted. For material based themes you must cover the properties of the materials used. There may of course be some overlap. Review the technique/materials used and detail why these were chosen, ie this means you must review the possible alternatives and argue logically why the final technique/material was adopted. For all themes your review must include : ? cost (economy of the technique adopted, were other solutions cheaper but less reliable? Were other options more expensive but economically not viable ?), ? environment (would other techniques have had a lesser/ greater impact on the environment? Was the environment considered at all, if not then what impact will the project have?) ? safety (what were the main health and safety considerations? Both for the general public, during and after the project, and for the construction workers).
