From your policing experience, identify two decisions you have made, been involved in or are familiar with. These need not be related to your current post, but can be drawn from your past policing experience. Both decisions should have been taken to solve problems likely to be faced by first line managers. NOTE: One of these decisions must be routine in nature, while the other must be non-routine. At least one of the decisions should involve group decision making. Task Define and diagnose the problem / issue which led to each decision and explain what alternative solutions were (or might have been) considered Analyse each decision, applying the rational decision making model and at least one alternative model to each decision. You do not have to apply the same alternative(s) to each decision, but you must use the rational model for both Discuss how a decision was (or might have been) made between the alternatives Discuss the methods used (or which might have been used) to gain acceptance and implementation of each decision From your analysis, evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the decision making process employed in each decision and draw conclusions on how such decisions might be better made in the future Candidate Guidance: In applying yourself to the assessment tasks, you should: Identify and address the key issues raised by each decision Refer to relevant concepts discussed in the course learning materials and in any other sources of study you have used Provide evidence and / or examples to support your analysis and conclusions Accurately reference any academic material you draw on Ensure your submission appropriately addresses each area of the assessment criteria (overleaf) If it becomes necessary, for clarity, to describe the decisions in depth, it is permissible to write a short appendix which will not contribute to your word count. The appendix should only contain information useful to the assessor in setting the context and background to the decisions. Any material submitted for assessment should be contained in your assessment submission, although it may be repeated in the appendix
