Using the Six (6) Step Decision Making Process as a guide conclude whether the hospital used a logical thought and planning process to make their decision regarding electronic recordkeeping. Evaluate each of the scenario outcomes from the first five steps of the decision making process and determine if alternative decisions could have been made. The attached scenario provides relevant background information. The Grove City Hospital in Scarsdale, N.Y. is independently owned. Over three quarters of their patients are young adults and families. It has 400 patients and a staff of 1300 employees. The Medical records of each patient has always been kept in document form on the premises. They are wondering if they should find an electronic means of documentation and storage. So the CEO Mr. Pardee is considering whether to initially have all documentation filled out by the patient at a computer terminal with assistance available for special cases. No other hospital in the area has adopted electronic records. However, the hospital’s customers are very impatient with waiting for assistance in the waiting rooms. Also there have been lines of patients waiting in the ER. Wait times have been about 4 to 5 hours. The hospital did a study of its customers and they found in 95% of the cases when patients could enter their own data and save on waiting time, based on the projected benefits, patients were in favor of the change to automation. As a result of this study, the hospital feels it is in the best interests of all concerned. Efficiency studies show that this will shave off 1 hour off wait time for patients in the Outpatient area and 2 hours off time in the ER. Also it will save the hospital over $385,000 in salaries alone, never mind being able to process 1/3 more patients per day than the 500 (250 in the ER) patients a day seen presently. The budget available is for 1 million dollars. The area surrounding the hospital is presently experiencing a boom with reasonably priced housing and abundant jobs since several new high tech companies have moved their operations to the area. The hospital administrator, after consultation with the hospital board and chief surgeon, decides to implement the new electronic records system.
