Summary The summary should be accurate and objective. It should be a summary of the main idea or central point of the article. The first sentence should contain the author’s name, the title of the article, and a brief statement about the article. Do not include your reactions in the summary part of the paper. This should be at least one paragraph long. It is fine to use quotes in the summary, but for this paper, use only one quote in the summary. Select a quote that is powerful and meaningful. Be sure to use an author tag (i.e. Cohen says, Cohen states, Cohen explains, According to Cohen,). All author tags should be in present tense. The end of the summary paragraph will transition to your thesis. Your thesis should address some of the following concerns. • Do you agree, disagree, or have mixed feelings about the author’s opinion? • Is the evidence sufficient to support the author’s viewpoint? • Is the evidence accurate and logical? • Has the author addressed the major opposing arguments? • Has the author successfully counterargued the opposing arguments? • Is the author convincing, and why or why not? Response The response part of the paper is your reaction to the article. Select points in the article and respond to them. Each point should be addressed in one paragraph, and you should have at least three points that you address. (Therefore, you should have at least three body paragraphs.) Again, quotes should be used sparingly and saved for special items. Both quotes and paraphrasing must be cited in the source. (See below in APA Format.) Each paragraph will start off by summarizing the point made by the author followed by your response to that point. Conclusion The conclusion of the paper is an overall summary of your response to the article as a whole. You can do any of the following in your conclusion. • Persuade the readers to reject the author’s argument. • Give advice to the author. • Connect the topic to your own life. • Predict future experience or state hope for the future. • Raise questions about the topic. • Make a recommendation. • Provide a solution. • Invite readers to apply knowledge or insight gained to their own lives. APA Format You do NOT need a title page for this essay. You will only have one source for this paper, but you need to cite it properly using the APA format. It is required that you cite the author in parenthesis if the author’s name is not in the sentence and the page number. Or, just the page number if the name is mentioned in the sentence. (See your Pocket Manual.) You will have a “Works Cited” page at the end of your essay. (See pages pp. 166-184 in your Pocket Manual.) This must be a separate page from your essay.
