CASE STUDY: ''The Gang'' ''The Gang'' is a group of 12 children and young people. The group members range in age from 8 to 17 years, and include a number of girls. Although predominantly white there are some members who are dual-heritage or from an ethnic minority group. Group relationships are shown in diagrammatic form at the end of the case study. Most days group members gather either in the park, outside the one remaining shop, or in the garden of one of the boarded up houses. None of the older members are in employment or attend school regularly, and much of their time together is spent sitting around, messing about, sharing cigarettes and the occasional ''spliff'' or can of lager if someone has had some money. On occasions the opportunity arises for the group to become involved in activities which offer more excitement and thrills. More often than not these are no more than innocent childish mischief, but may also be acts of disorder, delinquency, harassment or crime. The ''Gang'' is well known in the area, and is seen as responsible for much of the trouble in the area. Group members complain that they are unfairly blamed for everything bad that happens on the estate. They blame their problematic behaviour on boredom and lack of anything to do.
