You must incorporate points a-d to pass Failure to do so will result in a resit or fail - see grading criteria: a) Apply decision-making theory to the decision that you made b) Clearly identify your decision and provide an account of the search process in an appendix (about 250-500 words and/or a detailed appropriate table. This is not counted in word count: (see additional guidance below) c) Provide a review of the best available evidence on which your decision was/could have been made (at least 2 sources) demonstrating use of a framework for critically appraising the evidence you have used (i.e. primary research, clinical guidelines, literature reviews) d) Discuss implications/recommendations for future practice. Possible structure (remember your whole essay should be reflective) 1. Introduce the structure of your essay. This should include what your essay will include and in what order. You could briefly discuss/reflect on broader issues such as evidence based practice/clinical governance 2. Clearly state what the decision was early in the essay (i.e. “I decided that…”) avoid un-necessary description 3. Briefly reflect on the decision you have made then apply it to relevant decision-making theory. 4. It is helpful to rephrase your decision in the form of a question e.g. ‘Would wound healing be more effective by leaving the wound exposed or by applying a non-adherent dressing?’ 5. Consider relevant ethical, legal or professional issues 6. Briefly reflect on the effectiveness of your search process and refer to the search strategy in the appendix 7. In the search methods (appendix) describe/demonstrate the search process including key search terms, alternative words used (?use of a thesaurus), expanding or focussing your search, combining terms, your inclusion and exclusion criteria and results (number of hits) and limitations of your search (i.e. what may have prevented you getting the best available evidence). The process should be clear how you arrived at the final evidence you used. 8. State any frameworks used for appraising the evidence. 9. Demonstrate critical appraisal of at least 2 examples of relevant evidence related to your decision. 10. State the findings/results of the evidence you have used. Remember even if you find contradictory, poor or no evidence to support your decision then this can still be a useful conclusion and you may need to make recommendations for further research. 11. Consider the impact of your findings on future practice (clinically and academically, personally and broader). 12. Conclude your essay with key points relating back to the title and key concepts (no new information in the conclusion) 13. Appendices should be labelled alphabetically and placed after the reference list
