Assignment is to write a 10 to 15 page memorandum that will serve as your personal plan for when you do become a manager. For this assignment, assume that you have taken your bosses job, or the job of your bosses’ boss. (You may assume that you have taken other management jobs, such as owning your own company, but they need to be significant management positions.) Briefly describe that position and your scope of responsibilities. Your paper should then apply the concepts introduced in this course and should cover how you would handle the following topics with your new Department/Division. In doing so, be specific and provide detailed lists, strategies and actions that you will commit to take. For this plan to be effective, it needs to contain specific approaches, actions, strategies you will take or implement. Do not generalize or be vague since vague and unclear managers are usually weak managers. 1. Expectations: How will you set expectations for your department or division? What would those expectations be? 2. Communications: How would you communication with your staff and subordinates within your Division/Department. What would you do to ensure you’re your department or division had an adequate level of communication? 3. Organizational Culture and Climate: What kind of organizational culture would you want your department or division to have? What specific steps would you take to help create and foster that culture? 4. Training and Development: What would you do, assuming a limited budget, to train and develop the talent and skills of the people in your department or division? Individual Performance Goals and Expectations: How would you ensure that each employee knew what expectations you had regarding their performance? How would you develop those individual expectations, and how would you communicate them? 7. Performance Evaluations: How would you assess the performance of your subordinates? How would you conduct their performance reviews? 8. Poorly Performing Subordinates: Assume you have a subordinate who is not performing well due to a lack of effort and a poor attitude. What steps would you take to improve his/her performance? 9. Awards and Bonuses: What would your policy be regarding performance bonuses at the end of a performance period? Would you stress individual bonuses or team bonuses? Would you give everyone the same amount or more for the top performers? Would you give zero to the poor performers? In grading this paper, I will critique your plan, so that you can continue to refine and improve it long after the class has ended. The main purpose of this assignment is to have you think through these issues and topics and have a “plan of attack” ready for when you do become a manager. Once you are in a management position, you may not have time to do this; thus, aspiring managers and leaders need to have thought through these issues well in advance. The world is full of poor managers who don’t know what they are doing. This plan is one way to ensure that you do not become one of them. As always, you need to use references to course material to back up your assertions or the management techniques you intend to employ. I want more than just a set of opinions. Additionally, it needs to be well written and grammatically correct. This paper should represent your best work of this semester. Given the length of this assignment, and its long term value to you, it is recommended that you start several weeks early and really give these issues the quality thought they deserve.
